🎮📺 DVI • Component Cable
This cable converts a DVI-I port into three RCA connectors carrying YPbPr component video. It does not perform digital-to-analog conversion—it simply routes analog signals already present on the DVI-I pins. Only certain ATI Radeon GPUs and a few legacy devices support this output mode.
🔧 Cable Format & Use Case
- 🔌 DVI-I Male → RCA Component Male (Red/Green/Blue)
- DVI plugs into GPU or device with analog component support
- RCA plugs into HDTV, projector, or AV receiver’s component input
- Use Case: Output analog video from PC to component display
🖥️ Compatible Devices
- 🧠 ATI Radeon GPUs with YPbPr output via DVI-I:
- Radeon 9800 / 9700 / 9600 / 9500 / 8500 series
- All-in-Wonder Radeon 9800 / 9700 / 9600 / 8500 / 8500DV
- 📺 HDTVs, CRTs, and projectors with component input
- 📼 AV receivers and switchers with YPbPr passthrough
- 🛠️ Media center PCs and retro gaming rigs
✅ Common Uses
- 🧠 Connect PC to analog HDTV for big-screen gaming or media playback
- 🎮 Play retro games on CRTs with component input
- 📡 Output DVD-quality video from legacy GPUs
- 🛠️ Integrate PC into AV receiver-based home theater
- 🧪 Test analog video output from DVI-I sources
🧠 Signal Format Notes
- ⚙️ DVI-I: Integrated analog + digital interface; this cable uses analog pins
- 📡 Outputs YPbPr component video—not RGB or VGA
- 📺 Supports resolutions like 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i (based on GPU firmware)
- 🔁 No audio—video only; audio must be routed separately
- 📉 Requires device-side support—won’t work with DVI-D or unsupported GPUs
⚠️ Things to Watch Out For
- 🚫 Not compatible with DVI-D (digital-only) ports
- 🔌 Only works with devices that output YPbPr over DVI-I
- 🧯 No signal conversion—this is a passive cable, not a transcoder
- 📉 Will not work with HDMI, DisplayPort, or most modern GPUs
- 🧪 Always verify GPU model and cable compatibility before use
🛠️ Quick Tips for Beginners
- 🧠 Confirm your GPU or device supports analog component output via DVI-I
- 🔍 Use DIP switches or driver settings to select resolution and format
- 🧲 Choose shielded RCA cables for best signal clarity
- 🧼 Clean DVI and RCA contacts gently—dust can cause sync issues
- 🏷️ Label cable ends clearly—especially in mixed AV setups
